In the middle of a salt desert that was once a vast lake, a handful of giants have been standing guard for more than a thousand years. Giants of an Ancient Lake is a premium natural history documentary, captured in breathtaking 4K over nineteen months, about the baobab trees of Botswana’s Makgadikgadi Salt Pans and the animals and people whose lives depend on them.
Each baobab is a forest unto itself. Hornbills nest in its hollows, bee-eaters hunt from its branches, bees build hives inside the trunk, spiders spin webs across the canopy and squirrels race along the bark. But in the dry season, when water disappears, the elephants arrive. Thirsty and hungry, they tear into the trunks to reach the moisture stored inside. Some trees will not survive. For others, it is one more scar in a thousand-year life.
As the seasons swing from scorching drought to sudden, violent storms, the film follows life around the baobabs, from families who gather and pray in their shade to communities who have relied on them for centuries. Observational and full of close encounters, Giants of an Ancient Lake is a story of survival, balance and resilience in one of the harshest places on Earth.
